Dr. Matthew Sandberg & Dr. Katelyn Stine integrate each implant procedure with our 3D imaging and CEREC technologies, so patients leave our office with better and more effective results. Firefly Family Dentistry works with independent dental professionals to complete each treatment safely and quickly. Whether you need to replace a single tooth or multiple teeth, our dentists can provide you with safe implant treatment using the most up-to-date technology and dental implants in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
Dental implants are designed to replace your teeth in the most ideal way possible. Specifically, the most ideal tooth replacement is one that both functions and looks like a natural tooth. A natural tooth has two key parts: the crown and the root. Subsequently, a dental implant also has these two parts.
The post of a dental implant takes the place of the tooth root and is made of titanium, which is accepted very readily by the body and should not cause any problems for the surrounding oral tissues. The implant post is first placed into the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth. The post then fuses with the jawbone for a strong foundation, much like the original tooth root. Successful fusion usually takes a few months; we will schedule follow-up appointments to check on the progress of your implant post fusion.
Once the post has successfully fused with the jawbone and is determined to be stable, our dentists will install the second part of the dental implant, which is the part that will be visible in your mouth. As such, it will be carefully crafted to match the aesthetics of your smile and face so that your appearance is as natural as possible. This restoration may be a crown, bridge or set of dentures depending on what you and our dentists have decided together you need. The restoration will be placed on top of the post and fitted for comfort and function.
Missing Tooth vs. Dental Implant
Many patients see little problem with one missing tooth out of a mouthful, especially if it’s not noticeable when talking. However, even one missing tooth can significantly impact your dental health.
When a tooth is missing, other teeth can shift and create problems with your bite. The jawbone that once supported the tooth will start to break down because it no longer has a purpose. This instability impacts neighboring teeth, leading to crowding or misalignment. It’s not uncommon to lose one or both adjacent teeth within 4-8 years after a tooth is lost.
With modern dental technology, you have multiple options for missing teeth, including dental implants. In addition to implants looking like a natural tooth, the implant post gives the jaw a purpose, keeping it active and retaining bone mass.
Firefly Family Dentistry can prepare a complete estimate of the dental implant cost and go over it with you before incurring any expenses. Convenient financing options are also available.

How Implants Work
Like the crown and root of your natural teeth, dental implants have a crown (tooth restoration) and a post made of titanium. Once placed in the jaw, the post fuses with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. There is no shortcut for this process, which takes several months, but it’s why fused implants don’t move, and bone loss is minimal.
Once the post has fused, the dentist installs the tooth restoration on top of the post. This process can be for a single tooth or part of a bridge or set of dentures.
Dental Implant Surgery
Dental implant surgery usually takes a couple of hours under local anesthesia (plus sedation, if needed). We make small incisions in the gums and insert the implant posts into the jawbone. Then we stitch the incisions, and you go home to start the healing process.
Successful dental implant surgery has a success rate of 95%, and dental implants are designed to last for more than 30 years. With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, your implants can last a lifetime!
Dental Implants Costs and Benefits
The benefits of dental implants are many, including:
- They look and act like natural teeth
- Implants restore your chewing power
- They are embedded into the jaw, preventing bone loss
- Implants prevent a “sunken” look in your cheeks
- No movement or discomfort (as can happen with dentures)
- They can last for a lifetime
Although initial costs are higher than for a bridge or denture, dental implants are more cost-effective in the long run. You won’t need frequent replacements and adjustments or need to purchase supplies such as adhesives and cleaning solutions.
A dental implant can allow you to eat and smile again without worry! It is strong enough for all of your favorite foods, and with proper dental care both at home and in our office, it can last many years or even the rest of your life. Please schedule a consultation if you would like to learn more!
