What Are Dental Impressions?

Dental digital impressions, or 3D intraoral scanning, allow us to capture a complete replica of your mouth and its internal structures. There’s no uncomfortable mold you have to keep in the back of your mouth. Instead, we use a wand-like tool that feeds information to a computer using advanced software to construct a model of the hard and soft tissues in your mouth.

This dental technology allows us to create far more accurate results than molds, and we can use the results for various dental treatments and solutions. After we take scans, we can instantly send the results to the lab to create accurate crowns, bridges, veneers, retainers, and more with pinpoint accuracy. Likewise, the process is quick and seamless, allowing us to instantly get the results back to you.

Why Digital Impressions?

Cleaner than traditional molds, digital impressions are comfortable and take little time. During a digital image scan, you’ll have no problems if you have sensitive teeth or a strong gag reflex.

Perhaps the most significant benefit of digital scans lies in their accuracy. Dr. Matthew Sandberg and Dr. Katelyn Stine can see the scan results instantly on a screen, allowing him to make adjustments in real-time to ensure the perfect impression.

What Is Dental 3D Printing?

We can use a lot of new dental technology in tandem to create lasting results. 3D printing is the catalyst for digital dentistry and one of the reasons digital impression scientists designed this dental technology. Because they are reliable, robust, and high-quality, 3D prints can create a wide array of dental implants and treatments that make getting restorative care more accessible than ever.

Until recently, digital printers were only affordable in the latest dental labs. However, they’re now widespread in almost every dental practice. At Firefly Family Dentistry, our 3D printers utilize a laser that polymerizes a liquid with computer-guided precision to create small objects, like crowns, with intricate details. Our dental technicians can make objects as small as dental caps to as large as a complete set of veneers using computer-assisted design.

The Process and Benefits of 3D Printing

When using 3D printing dental technology, Dr. Sandberg and Dr. Stine follow four steps:

  1. Scan: He takes a digital impression of your mouth and structures, sending them to a lab for design.
  2. Design: We import the initial scan into the CAD design software, where it’s actualized.
  3. Print: Once we finish the design, we import the file to the printer software for setup and final checks.
  4. Prepare: After getting the printed results, we wash, dry, and post-cure the mold.

3D printed materials have a wide range of uses in dentistry, including:

  • Tooth-colored crowns and bridges
  • Clear aligner models
  • Surgical guides
  • Splints
  • Occlusal guards
  • Patterns for casting and pressing
  • Full dentures
  • Retainers
